To Blog or Not to Blog

"Do I need a blog for my company website?"

This is a question we've been asked countless times and since we've decided to start our very own blog, I thought it fitting that this should be our first post.

If handled correctly, a blog can help you:

  • attract new visitors and keep them coming back
  • gain credibility within your industry
  • build a community of loyal followers

But be aware that blogging is not for everyone and if not handled correctly, will just be a big waste of time.  Blogging takes planning and effort, so before you decide to stake your claim in the blogospere lets take a look at a few questions you should ask yourself to see if a blog is right for your company.

Do you have anything to say?

With so many blogs on the Internet, you need something unique, something that will get someone's attention and provide useful information to your readers.  Are you an expert in your field?  Do you keep up with current news, events and information about your specific topic?  Would anyone care about what you have to say?  If so then a blog might just be the platform you are looking for.

Do you have time (or resources) to blog?

Properly maintaining a blog takes time and effort.  If you don't have the time to keep up with your blog, it will lose its appeal with your audience and ultimately fail.  Like many, you may be too busy keeping up with your business to afford the time to blog.  Is there anyone else in your organization that can do it?  Consider a customer support person or an employee that you feel has enough experience in the chosen topic of your blog to handle the responsibility.  Make sure they can write, though.

Will it help your business?

Due to the amount of upfront time and onging time required to get a blog off the ground, making sure that it fits in with the overall goals of your business matters.  Like anything else worth doing for your business, it takes time to deliver results.  At first you will have few readers and will need to spend time promoting your blog and writing useful posts without any real results.  After time, you may realize that it hasn't helped and is consuming more time than it's worth.  So make sure you have a good plan in place to be sure you are getting the results you want and that those results can actually help your business.

To conclude, a blog can be an extremely useful component of your company website and business.  Just make sure that you are blogging for the right reasons and you are prepared to put the right amount of time and effort into it for a long enough time to get the results you are looking for.
